Russian artist ::vtol:: (aka. Dmitry Morozov) creates physical gadgets that deploy algorithms in the sound making process. This project, Red, combines optical projections with electronic sound synthesis. The sound has four channels, each of which interacts with the various physical components, including position of the motors and brightness of the light. For more on Red, see the Creators Project post.

Bartholomaus Traubeck: Years
The Palmer Drought Severity Index (PDSI) utilizes tree rings to inform us of dry and wet years in a region, spanning 1000 years of data. Taking inspiration from Traubeck’s Years, where an optical light reads the rings of a tree like an LP, playing piano music based upon this light information. http://traubeck.com/years/

Zimoun: Sound Sculptures
Zimoun has always been an inspiring artist in sound. He uses simple components that collectively articulate emotional or conceptual depth. Taking inspiration for Aqualitative with the work “36 ventilators, 4.7m3 packing chips” (2014).
